Strong nonlinear optical response of graphene flakes measured by four-wave mixing
We present the first experimental investigation of nonlinear optical
properties of graphene flakes. We find that at near infrared frequencies a
graphene monolayer exhibits a remarkably high third-order optical nonlinearity
which is practically independent of the wavelengths of incident light. The
nonlinear optical response can be utilized for imaging purposes, with image
contrasts of graphene which are orders of magnitude higher than those obtained
using linear microscopy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Spray nozzle designs for agricultural aviation applications
Techniques of generating monodisperse sprays and information concerning chemical liquids used in agricultural aviation are surveyed. The periodic dispersion of liquid jet, the spinning disk method, and ultrasonic atomization are the techniques discussed. Conceptually designed spray nozzles for generating monodisperse sprays are assessed. These are based on the classification of the drops using centrifugal force, on using two opposing liquid laden air jets, and on operating a spinning disk at an overloaded flow. Performance requirements for the designs are described and estimates of the operational characteristics are presented
Conductance Fluctuations of Generic Billiards: Fractal or Isolated?
We study the signatures of a classical mixed phase space for open quantum
systems. We find the scaling of the break time up to which quantum mechanics
mimics the classical staying probability and derive the distribution of
resonance widths. Based on these results we explain why for mixed systems two
types of conductance fluctuat ions were found: quantum mechanics divides the
hierarchically structured chaotic component of phase space into two parts - one
yields fractal conductance fluctuations while the other causes isolated
resonances. In general, both types appear together, but on different energy
scales.Comment: restructured and new figure
Existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions for neutral stochastic partial integrodifferential equations with infinite delays
In this work we study the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of mild solutions for neutral stochastic partial integrodifferential equations with infinite delays. To prove the results, we use the theory of resolvent operators as developed by R. Grimmer [12] R. Grimmer. Resolvent operators for integral equations in a banach space. Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 273(1): 333-349, 1982, as well as a version of the fixed point principle. We establish sufficient conditions ensuring that the mild solutions are exponentially stable in pth-moment. An example is provided to illustrate the abstract results.Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo RegionalMinisterio de EconomÃa y CompetitividadConsejerÃa de Innovación, Ciencia y Empresa (Junta de AndalucÃa
A transient homotypic interaction model for the influenza A virus NS1 protein effector domain
Influenza A virus NS1 protein is a multifunctional virulence factor consisting of an RNA binding domain (RBD), a short linker, an effector domain (ED), and a C-terminal 'tail'. Although poorly understood, NS1 multimerization may autoregulate its actions. While RBD dimerization seems functionally conserved, two possible apo ED dimers have been proposed (helix-helix and strand-strand). Here, we analyze all available RBD, ED, and full-length NS1 structures, including four novel crystal structures obtained using EDs from divergent human and avian viruses, as well as two forms of a monomeric ED mutant. The data reveal the helix-helix interface as the only strictly conserved ED homodimeric contact. Furthermore, a mutant NS1 unable to form the helix-helix dimer is compromised in its ability to bind dsRNA efficiently, implying that ED multimerization influences RBD activity. Our bioinformatical work also suggests that the helix-helix interface is variable and transient, thereby allowing two ED monomers to twist relative to one another and possibly separate. In this regard, we found a mAb that recognizes NS1 via a residue completely buried within the ED helix-helix interface, and which may help highlight potential different conformational populations of NS1 (putatively termed 'helix-closed' and 'helix-open') in virus-infected cells. 'Helix-closed' conformations appear to enhance dsRNA binding, and 'helix-open' conformations allow otherwise inaccessible interactions with host factors. Our data support a new model of NS1 regulation in which the RBD remains dimeric throughout infection, while the ED switches between several quaternary states in order to expand its functional space. Such a concept may be applicable to other small multifunctional proteins
Theory versus experiment for the rotordynamic coefficients of annular gas seals. Part 1: Test facility and apparatus
A facility and apparatus are described for determining the rotordynamic coefficients and leakage characteristics of annular gas seals. The apparatus has a current top speed of 8000 cpm with a nominal seal diameter of 15.24 cmn (6 in). The air supply unit yields a seal pressure ratio of approximately 7. An external shaker is used to excite the test rotor. The capability to independently calculate all rotordynamic coefficients at a given operating condition with one excitation frequency are discussed
On the performance of algorithms for the minimization of -penalized functionals
The problem of assessing the performance of algorithms used for the
minimization of an -penalized least-squares functional, for a range of
penalty parameters, is investigated. A criterion that uses the idea of
`approximation isochrones' is introduced. Five different iterative minimization
algorithms are tested and compared, as well as two warm-start strategies. Both
well-conditioned and ill-conditioned problems are used in the comparison, and
the contrast between these two categories is highlighted.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures; v3: expanded version with an additional

A generic map has no absolutely continuous invariant probability measure
Let be a smooth compact manifold (maybe with boundary, maybe
disconnected) of any dimension . We consider the set of maps
which have no absolutely continuous (with respect to Lebesgue)
invariant probability measure. We show that this is a residual (dense
C^1$ topology.
In the course of the proof, we need a generalization of the usual Rokhlin
tower lemma to non-invariant measures. That result may be of independent
interest.Comment: 12 page
